Moving to British Columbia: Vancouver, Victoria and Kelowna
British Columbia combines Pacific coastal cities with very different Interior communities. Housing, work and winter travel deserve a city-by-city comparison.
Coast, island and Interior
Vancouver is the largest city in British Columbia, Victoria is the provincial capital on Vancouver Island, and Kelowna is an important Okanagan centre. An address in one of these markets brings a different combination of rental choice, commuting and access to other communities. Mainland and island travel can involve ferries or flights, while Interior travel may cross mountain routes. Include the location of work, household transport and access to services in the housing comparison.

Benchmark formula and source periodsConnecting work with location
Vancouver has a broad service economy, including professional and technical services, health care and retail. Across British Columbia, trade, tourism and resource-related activity also shape local employment. WorkBC provides occupation and regional information, and its newcomer resources point to employment support and credential-recognition services. Match a job search to the region and the duties of the occupation. For regulated work, check the provincial regulator alongside the employer's own qualifications and language requirements.

Settlement and language services
English is the main language used in provincial public services, and French-speaking communities and organizations are also part of the province. WelcomeBC is the government starting point for settlement information. It distinguishes services for permanent residents from support for temporary residents and other categories. A local settlement organization can help identify language classes, school information and employment resources. Ask about the service area as well as eligibility, especially when settling outside the largest urban centres.

MSP and getting on the road
For health insurance, review MSP enrolment requirements and the current coverage-start rule, including applicable exemptions. The usual waiting-period description combines the remainder of the arrival month with additional months, so check the precise date for your situation. ICBC provides the official moving-to-BC driving instructions. The previous licensing jurisdiction and driving record determine the exchange or testing process. Gather identification, residence evidence and driving records early, following the document and translation instructions for each service.

Rainy coast and colder Interior
Coastal winters are generally milder and wetter than winters in the Interior. Vancouver and Victoria differ from Kelowna, and mountain conditions can change the journey between them. Snow, ice and winter road requirements matter beyond the coastal city centre. Compare local station normals and the expected commute. A rental visit can include questions about heating, summer cooling, dampness and how the building manages severe weather.
